The Nanjing Massacre

On 13 December 1937 the Japanese army took Nanjing and for months looted, raped and killed; over 300,000 died.

The Chinese-American writer Iris Chang (1968–2004) wrote The Rape of Nanking; the Canadian-funded film “Iris Chang: The Rape of Nanking” was released at the end of 2007.

Stamps

In 1965 China Post issued W14 “Completion of the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge”, four stamps.

The Peng Yu case

The Peng Yu case was a highly controversial civil suit.

On 20 November 2006 Peng Yu, a Nanjing resident, accompanied an elderly Mrs Xu who had fallen at a bus stop to hospital. She said he had knocked her down; he said he was only helping. Her family, whose son worked for the police, sued him for damages.

In September 2007 the Gulou District court found that “by his own admission Peng was the first off the bus and by common sense was quite likely to have collided with her”, and that “had he been doing a good deed he could have explained matters once her family arrived and left; that he did not is plainly contrary to reason”. He was ordered to pay 45,876 yuan.

The ruling caused an outcry; by press reports many people across the country no longer dared help strangers. In November 2007 the parties settled through the mediation of the Jiangsu party secretary.
