About

The Doupeng–Jianjiang scenic area lies 22 km north-west of Duyun, Guizhou, in five parts: Mount Doupeng, the Jian River, Luosike, the Fengzhuan River and the Duliu River.

Mount Doupeng is named for its shape like a cape; the main peak is 1,961 m. It has primeval forest, river valleys, caves and waterfalls, wild boar, golden pheasants and monkeys, and yew and gingko.

It is in the fifth batch of national parks of China (national scenic areas) named by the State Council in 2004.

Travel tips

Getting there: Duyun has a high-speed station (Duyun East) and a conventional station. From Guiyang the high-speed train takes about 40 minutes. The scenic area lies about 22 km northwest of the city and is reached by bus or taxi from the city.

Layout: five areas, namely Mount Doupeng, Sword River, Luosike, Fengzhuan River and the Duliu River. Doupeng is the forested mountain, the Sword River is the stretch beside the city, and Luosike has caves.

Mount Doupeng: a high mountain with primeval forest, valleys, caves and waterfalls, with a number of paths; a climb to the top takes half a day. The highest point is 1,961 m.

Sword River: near the city centre, with riverside paths and parks, suitable for a half-day walk.

Time: one day is enough for Doupeng alone; add the Sword River and Luosike and you need two days.

Season: summer is cool and autumn brings colour to the forest. In winter the mountain top can freeze, and spring is often wet and misty.

Where to stay: Duyun city has plenty of lodging and is the base for the sights.

Nearby: Duyun is the seat of Qiannan Prefecture and is known for Maojian tea, grown in the surrounding hills.

Caution: the hills see a lot of rain and mist and the paths are slippery, so wear shoes with grip and carry rain gear.
