Taoyuan Cave

Taoyuan Cave lies by National Highway 205 9 km north of Yong’an, Fujian, an area of 29 km² in five parts, Taoyuan Cave, Baizhang Rock, Xiuzhu Bay, Geli and Linglü Pool, on both banks of the Sha River.

The Taoyuan Cave part, 0.74 km², is Danxia landform with strange peaks and sheer cliffs: the cave mouth, the One-Line Sky, the Suodong Bridge and the Guanyin Hall. The One-Line Sky is 120 m long and at its narrowest admits one person sideways.

It is in the third batch of national parks of China (national scenic areas) named by the State Council in 1994.

Travel tips

Getting there: head first for Yong'an, a county-level city in Sanming, Fujian. Taoyuan Caves lie about 9 km north of the centre and Linyin Stone Forest about 13 km to the northwest, in Dahu town. They are separate sites, so you need local buses, a taxi or a hired car.

Taoyuan Caves: Danxia landforms; the main sights are the cave entrance, the Thread of Sky gorge and the Suodong bridge. The gorge is narrow enough that one person squeezes through sideways, and there can be a queue when it is busy.

Linyin Stone Forest: karst pillars and caves, spread over several areas including Hongyun Mountain, Shidong Hanquan and Shouchun Rock. Steps inside the caves are slippery.

Time: half a day for each site, so one day covers both; stay a night in Yong'an if you want a slower pace.

Route: Taoyuan Caves in the morning and the stone forest in the afternoon, or the other way round, returning to town between them.

Season: spring and autumn are comfortable; summer is hot, humid and wet.

Where to stay: there is little lodging at the sites, so most visitors stay in Yong'an town, which is also convenient for food and transport.

Note: caves are cool and damp; bring a light jacket and shoes with grip.

Linyin Stone Forest

The Linyin Stone Forest in Dahu township 13 km north-west of the city covers 1.21 km² of karst in six parts, the Hongyun stone forest, Cuiyun Cave, Shouchun Rock, the Eighteen Caves and the cold spring cave; the tallest column in the caves is 36 m.
