About
Shishapangma, in Nyalam County, Tibet, near Zhangmu in the central Himalaya, is the last of the world’s 14 peaks over 8,000 m and the only one wholly inside China. It has three summits, 8,012 m, 8,008 m and 7,966 m; the Yebokangjal glacier lies on its north face and the Daqu glacier on the south.
In 1964 a Chinese team of ten made the first ascent. In August 2002 an avalanche killed five students of a Peking University expedition.
The fifth stamp of the 1965 set S70 “Mountaineering in China” shows the ascent of Shishapangma.
