White Dragon Lake lies in Qingchuan County, Guangyuan, Sichuan, where Shaanxi, Gansu and Sichuan meet, 60 km from Guangyuan. The 73 km² area is a reservoir behind the Baozhusi power station dam, with 62 km² of water.

It lies in the low mountains and gorges where the Longmen and Motianling ranges meet, on the Bailong River, a tributary of the upper Jialing; upstream is Jiuzhaigou.

It is in the fifth batch of national parks of China (national scenic areas) named by the State Council in 2004.

Travel tips

Getting there: the lake is in Qingchuan county, Guangyuan, about 60 km from the city. Guangyuan has a high-speed rail station and an airport. From Guangyuan take a bus to Qingchuan and on to the lake, or drive.

Layout: the lake was formed by the Baozhusi hydropower dam. Its water area is about 62 sq km, with a winding shoreline and many peninsulas and islands.

What to do: the visit is mainly by boat on the lake, looking at the hills and shoreline villages. There are also viewpoints on the shore.

Time: half a day to a day.

Season: summer is cool and good for a lake trip, autumn has varied colours, and winter has more fog. The water level also changes with the operation of the power station.

Where to stay: Qingchuan town and the lake shore have hotels and farmhouse inns, and Guangyuan has more.

Nearby: Jianmen Pass and Zhaohua old town in Guangyuan, and the Tangjiahe Nature Reserve in Qingchuan, are close and can be linked.

Caution: boats may stop in heavy fog or wind, so leave some time to spare.
