About

The Boshan scenic area in southern Zibo, Shandong, 73 km², has eight parts: Yuanshan, Lushan, Yuanquan, Qiaolingqian, Jinniushan, Shimen, Baishidong and Wuyangshan. Its main features are caves, with streams, springs and waterfalls.

Boshan, anciently Yanshen, has the oldest surviving stretch of the Great Wall of Qi and the battlefield of Changshao.

It is in the fourth batch of national parks of China (national scenic areas) named by the State Council in 2002.

Travel tips

Getting there: Boshan is in the south of Zibo. Zibo station is in Zhangdian; buses run from there to Boshan in about an hour, and there is a high-speed train from Jinan to Zibo.

Areas: the park has eight areas, including Yuanshan, Lushan and Yuanquan. They are large and scattered, so most visitors choose two or three; the scenery is mainly caves, streams and springs.

Qi Great Wall: Boshan has sections of the early Qi Great Wall, mostly along ridges, which require a climb.

Boshan town: the town has long been known for coloured glass and ceramics, with related displays.

Time: half a day to a day; two or three areas take a day.

Season: spring and autumn are best; the hills are cool in summer; winter is cold.

Where to stay: Boshan town or Zhangdian in Zibo.

Nearby: Qingzhou lies to the east, and Jinan's Thousand Buddha Mountain and Mount Tai to the west.
