News

In June 2008 a sudden bloom of green algae (Enteromorpha) massed off Qingdao; tens of thousands of people cleared over 100,000 tonnes.

At 4:48 on 28 April 2008 train T195 from Beijing to Qingdao derailed between Zhoucun and Wangcun on the Jiaoji line and was struck by train 5034 from Yantai to Xuzhou, derailing its locomotive and five carriages: 70 dead and 416 injured. Preliminary findings pointed to a responsibility accident, not terrorism; the head of the Jinan railway bureau was dismissed.

At the end of 2007 grey wolves appeared at Jiaonan, killing poultry; the forestry department set up electric fences and traps and brought in four armed-police snipers, causing a strong controversy.

Stamps

The sixth stamp of the 20 December 2007 set 2007-32 “Games of the XXIX Olympiad – Competition Venues” shows the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center.
