About
Jiuyi Mountain and Mausoleum of Emperor Shun (九嶷山—舜帝陵风景名胜区) is a national park of China (ninth batch, designated by the State Council in 2017), located in Jiuyishan Yao Township, Ningyuan County, Yongzhou, Hunan.
The area is in Jiuyishan Yao Township in the south of Ningyuan County, Yongzhou, southern Hunan. It centres on Jiuyi Mountain in the Nanling range and the Mausoleum of Emperor Shun at its foot.
According to tradition the sage-emperor Shun died on a southern tour and was buried at Jiuyi Mountain. His mausoleum stands beneath Shunyuan Peak and has been the site of rites through many dynasties, with ceremonies still held yearly. The mountain has nine similar peaks (Shunyuan, Ehuang, Nuying, Qilin, Shicheng, Shilou, Zhuming, Xiaoshao and Guilin), so that one is confused as to which is which, hence the name. The source of the Xiaoshui River at Sanfenshi, about 1,800 m high, is also here, and the Yao people live in the area.
Travel tips
About 1.5 hours by road from Yongzhou to Ningyuan County, then further south into the hills. The mausoleum takes half a day and climbing the mountain another day. Spring and autumn suit best; summer is rainy. The area is some distance from the county town, so plan lodging there.
