About
Yangqi Mountain (杨岐山风景名胜区) is a national park of China (ninth batch, designated by the State Council in 2017), located in Yangqi Township, Shangli County, Pingxiang, Jiangxi.
The area is in Yangqi Township, Shangli County, Pingxiang, in western Jiangxi, about 40 km from the city centre. It centres on Yangqi Mountain and the Yangqi Puton Chan Temple on it.
The mountain is the birthplace of the Yangqi school of Chan (Zen) Buddhism. The monk Chengguang built a temple here in the Tang dynasty, and in the Northern Song Fanghui taught here and founded the Yangqi branch of the Linji school; with the Huanglong branch it became one of the two main branches of Linji and later spread to Japan. The hills are densely wooded with deep valleys, and the temple is built up the slope.
Travel tips
From Pingxiang go to Shangli County by road, then to Yangqi Township, about 1 hour in all. Half a day is enough. The mountain is cool in summer and can be visited in any season. The temple is an active place of worship, so dress neatly and keep quiet inside.
