About
Tashilhunpo, in the city of Shigatse, Tibet, founded in 1447 by the first Dalai Lama, is the seat of the Panchen Lamas and one of the six great monasteries of the Gelug school. Its Jampa chapel holds a 26 m gilded bronze Maitreya, the largest in the world, and its halls enshrine the stupa tombs of successive Panchen Lamas.
