  • Tibet Museum 西藏博物馆
    Tibet's first modern museum and its only comprehensive national first-class museum, holding over 520,000 objects including porcelain, Buddhist statues, thangkas, texts, seals and patents of investiture, among them prehistoric Tibetan artefacts and items conferred by successive central dynasties.
  • Norbulingka 罗布林卡
    Its Tibetan name means 'jewel garden'; a classical garden in the western suburbs of Lhasa.
  • Drepung Monastery 哲蚌寺
    A Gelug monastery of Tibetan Buddhism and one of Lhasa's 'three great monasteries', whose full name means 'Glorious Rice-Heap Victorious in All Directions'; 'Drepung' is Tibetan for 'rice heap'.

    A small island about 100 metres offshore in the southwest of Basum Tso, home to Tsodzong Monastery, a noted Nyingma temple founded in the late Tang period.
  • Midui Glacier 米堆冰川
    A glacier beside National Highway 318 in Yupu Township, Bomê County, formed by two icefalls with primeval forest between them, its tongue reaching Midui Village at only 2,400 metres, the lowest alpine glacier in the world. It is retreating rapidly with global warming.

    A Tibetan Buddhist monastery at the foot of Benbo Mountain in Sa'gya County, the principal seat of the Sakya school.
  • Qomolangma National Nature Reserve 珠穆朗玛峰国家级自然保护区
    A nature reserve centred on Mount Qomolangma, the world's highest peak and the main summit of the Himalayas at 8,848.86 metres, whose north face lies in Tingri County, Tibet.

Shannan (5)

  • Samye Monastery 桑耶寺
    A monastery at the foot of Habu Mountain on the north bank of the Yarlung Tsangpo, founded in the 8th century under the Tubo kingdom as the first in Tibet to ordain monks. Its central hall combines Tibetan, Chinese and Indian styles, hence the name 'three-style temple'. A national key cultural heritage site.
  • Chuzhu Monastery 昌珠寺
    A temple in Changzhu Town, Nêdong District, among the earliest Buddhist temples in Tibet, where Songtsen Gampo and Princess Wencheng once lived. Its main Tsokchen hall is laid out much like the Jokhang. Listed among the first national key cultural heritage sites in 1961.
  • Yamdrok Lake 羊卓雍错
    A lake in Nagarzê County, Shannan.
  • Yumbulagang 雍布拉康
    A palace on Tashi Tseri Hill in Changzhu Town, Nêdong District, said to have been built in 127 BC by Nyatri Tsenpo, chief of the Yarlung tribe, as the first palace in Tibet.

Ngari Prefecture (3)

  • Lake Manasarovar 玛旁雍错
    Its Tibetan name means 'unconquerable turquoise lake'. At 4,556 metres it is the world's highest freshwater lake by average elevation, lying near Mount Kangrinboqe. Sacred to Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Bon followers alike, it is a national nature reserve and on the World Heritage tentative list.
  • Pangong Lake 班公湖
    A lake in the western Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, known in Tibetan as Tsomo Nganglha Ringpo and rendered Panguang Lake in Qing records, located in Rutog County, Ngari Prefecture.
  • Guge Cultural Heritage Park 古格文化遗址公园

Nagqu (3)

  • Dangreyong Lake 当惹雍错
    A saltwater lake in a fault basin at the northern foot of the Gangdise range in Nyima County, 4,528 metres above sea level and 835.3 square kilometres in area, shaped like a boot. Sacred to Bon followers, it has the Bon monastery Yubeng and the holy Qiongzong Mountain on its east shore.
