About
Beijing Central Axis: A Building Ensemble Exhibiting the Ideal Order of the Chinese Capital (北京中轴线:中国理想都城秩序的杰作) was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2024 as a cultural site.
Travel tips
Getting there: the axis runs through the middle of old Beijing. Beijing, Beijing South and Beijing West stations and the Capital and Daxing airports all connect to the centre by metro or taxi.
Extent: the property includes the Bell and Drum Towers, Wanning Bridge, Jingshan, the Forbidden City, the Imperial Ancestral Temple, the Altar of Land and Grain (in Zhongshan Park), Tiananmen and its square, Zhengyangmen, the Temple of Heaven, the Altar of Agriculture and Yongdingmen. The property has 15 components, including Duanmen, the Outer Golden Water Bridges and the surviving southern road sections, and runs from the Bell and Drum Towers in the north to Yongdingmen in the south.
Route: start at the Bell Tower and go south past Wanning Bridge and Jingshan, through the Forbidden City, out via Tiananmen to Zhengyangmen, then on to the Temple of Heaven and Yongdingmen. Walking all of it takes more than a day, so most people split it up and use metro lines 1, 2 and 5 to link sections.
Viewpoint: the Wanchun Pavilion on Jingshan stands on the axis itself and looks over the whole Forbidden City and along the axis both ways. The Bell and Drum Towers can also be climbed.
Booking: the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and other main sites need real-name reservations, and entering Tiananmen Square requires ID. Each site is booked separately.
Time: two days is comfortable for the Forbidden City, Jingshan and the Temple of Heaven; with the Bell and Drum Towers and the Altar of Agriculture allow three. The Forbidden City alone takes half a day or more.
Season: spring and autumn are clear and best for walking. Summer is hot and wet; winter is dry and cold, but the Forbidden City under snow is worth seeing.
Where to stay: Wangfujing, Qianmen or the Gulou area put most of the axis within walking distance or a metro stop or two.
Note: the Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven are very large, so wear comfortable shoes. The Forbidden City is normally closed on Mondays; other sites close on other days.
Why it was inscribed

(iii) a unique or at least exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition or to a civilization which is living or which has disappeared.
(iv) an outstanding example of a type of building, architectural or technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates significant stages in human history.
Description (UNESCO World Heritage Centre)
Running north to south through the heart of historical Beijing, the Central Axis consists of former imperial palaces and gardens, sacrificial structures, and ceremonial and public buildings. Together they bear testimony to the evolution of the city and exhibits evidence of the imperial dynastic system and urban planning traditions of China. The location, layout, urban pattern, roads and design showcase the ideal capital city as prescribed in the Kaogongji, an ancient text known as the Book of Diverse Crafts. The area, between two parallel rivers, has been settled for about 3,000 years, but the
