    Former imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties, now a museum. Begun in 1406, it is the largest surviving ancient palace complex, and its collection centers on Ming and Qing court artifacts.

    Where Ming and Qing emperors worshipped Heaven and prayed for harvests. Covering about 2.73 million square meters, it is the largest surviving ancient sacrificial complex and became a World Heritage Site in 1998.

    Qing imperial garden-palace built around Longevity Hill and Kunming Lake. Its skillful blend of architecture and landscape represents Chinese garden art at its peak, and it became a World Heritage Site in 1998.

    Ming Great Wall at the north end of the Guangou pass in the Jundu Mountains, the outer gate of Juyongguan; open to visitors since 1958 and part of the World Heritage listing of 1987.

    Burial complex of thirteen Ming emperors at the foot of Tianshou Mountain, built over more than two centuries. It is among the best-preserved imperial tomb groups and became a World Heritage Site in 2003.
  • Prince Gong's Mansion Scenic Area 恭王府景区
    Xicheng District · 2012
    Residence and garden of Prince Gong (Yixin) of the Qing dynasty, developed from the former home of Heshen. It is a relatively well-preserved Qing princely mansion and a national key cultural heritage site.
  • Olympic Park 奥林匹克公园
    Chaoyang District · 2012
    Core area built for the 2008 Summer and 2022 Winter Olympics, covering about 11.6 square kilometers with a cluster of venues and a forest park, at the northern end of Beijing's central axis.

    Ruins of a large Qing imperial garden made up of the Yuanming, Changchun and Qichun gardens. It covers about 3.5 square kilometers and was once called the 'garden of gardens'.

  • Tianjin Ancient Culture Street (Jinmen Guli) 天津古文化街旅游区(津门故里)

    A pedestrian shopping street of Qing-style shopfronts centered on the Tianjin Tianhou Palace. It was an early cultural and commercial center of Tianjin and is known for folk crafts.
  • Panshan Scenic Area, Tianjin 天津盘山风景名胜区
    Tianjin · 2007
    A noted mountain on the southern edge of the Yanshan range, called the 'First Mountain East of the Capital'. Its scenery is striking, and the Qianlong Emperor visited repeatedly and left poems.

  • Shanhaiguan Scenic Area 山海关景区
    Qinhuangdao · 2007
    Famous pass at the eastern end of the Ming Great Wall, with the Yanshan range to the north and the Bohai Sea to the south. Known as the 'First Pass Under Heaven', it includes the pass city, outer city and garrison town.
  • Baiyangdian Scenic Area, Anxin 安新白洋淀景区
    Baoding · 2007
    The largest freshwater lake on the North China Plain, made up of many linked ponds and reed marshes. Lotus and reeds are its typical scenery.
  • Chengde Mountain Resort and Its Outlying Temples 承德避暑山庄及周围寺庙景区

    Summer retreat of Qing emperors together with the surrounding temples. It is the largest surviving imperial garden in China and became a World Heritage Site in 1994.
  • Yesanpo Scenic Area 野三坡景区
    Baoding · 2011
    Mountain and river scenery along both banks of the Juma River, noted for karst landforms, gorges and primeval forest, with several sub-areas such as Bailixia Gorge and Baicaopan.
  • Xibaipo Scenic Area 西柏坡景区
    Shijiazhuang · 2011
    Seat of the Communist Party Central Committee and the PLA headquarters in 1948-1949, where the Second Plenary Session of the Seventh Central Committee was held. The former site and memorial hall are key revolutionary landmarks.
  • Eastern Qing Tombs Scenic Area 清东陵景区
    Tangshan · 2015
    The largest imperial burial ground of the Qing dynasty, on Changrui Mountain, with five emperors' tombs and many tombs of empresses and consorts in a grand setting.
  • Wahuang Palace Scenic Area 娲皇宫景区
    Handan · 2015
    Ancient temple complex honoring the goddess Nüwa, built against a cliff on the mountainside. It dates from the Ming dynasty and is a national key cultural heritage site.
  • Baishishan Scenic Area 白石山景区
    Baoding · 2017
    A mountain scenic area at the northern tip of the Taihang Mountains, with a main peak 2,096 meters high. Its white marble peaks are steep, and it is part of the Fangshan UNESCO Global Geopark.
  • Guangfu Ancient City Scenic Area 广府古城景区
    Handan · 2017
    Seat of Guangping Prefecture in the Ming and Qing dynasties, built on a peninsula in the Yongnian wetland. Its walls and moat are fairly well preserved, making it a rare water-girt ancient town in North China.
  • Western Qing Tombs Scenic Area 清西陵景区
    Baoding · 2020
    One of the three imperial burial grounds of the Qing dynasty, begun in 1729. It holds four emperors, nine empresses and many consorts, and its building groups are fairly well preserved.
  • Jinshanling Great Wall Scenic Area 金山岭长城景区

    A 10.5-kilometer stretch of the Ming Great Wall with five passes and 67 watchtowers, known for its well-preserved and varied structures.
  • Tangshan Nanhu Kailuan Tourist Area 南湖·开滦旅游景区

    A central urban ecological park converted from a coal-mining subsidence zone, with a series of connected lakes. It hosted the 2016 World Horticultural Expo and includes Kailuan mining heritage.

    The second-largest freshwater lake on the North China Plain after Baiyangdian, about 75 square kilometers. A nature reserve with an intact wetland ecosystem, it supports many water birds.

  • Yungang Grottoes 云冈石窟

    Large cave-temple complex carved in the Northern Wei, stretching about a kilometer along the hillside with 51 main caves. The earliest Tanyao Five Caves hold monumental statues, and the site became a World Heritage Site in 2001.
  • Mount Wutai Scenic Area 五台山风景名胜区
    Xinzhou · 2007
    Sacred site of the bodhisattva Manjushri in Chinese Buddhism, named for its five flat-topped peaks. Dense with temples, it is the foremost of China's four sacred Buddhist mountains and became a World Heritage Site in 2009.
  • Huangcheng Xiangfu Ecological and Cultural Tourist Area 皇城相府生态文化旅游区

    Residence of Chen Tingjing, a Grand Secretary under the Kangxi Emperor, with an inner and an outer city and 16 courtyards. It is a well-preserved Ming-Qing official mansion complex.

    Mountain where Jie Zitui of the Spring and Autumn period went into seclusion and died in a fire, legendary origin of the Cold Food and Qingming festivals; Yunfeng Temple clings to Baofu Cliff; highest point about 2,560 meters.

    Compound of the Shanxi merchant Qiao Zhiyong at Qiaojiabao in Qixian, begun under the Qianlong emperor and typical of northern Qing houses; a national heritage site since 2001.

    One of China's best-preserved Ming-Qing county towns, with walls built in the Hongwu era of the Ming. It was a financial center in the late Qing and became a World Heritage Site in 1997.
  • Yanmenguan Pass Scenic Area 雁门关景区

    An important pass on the Great Wall in the Yanmen Mountains, one of the 'Three Outer Passes' with Ningwu and Pianguan, long a strategic military gateway in the north.

  • Hukou Waterfall on the Yellow River 黄河壶口瀑布旅游区

    Waterfall in the Jin-Shaan Grand Canyon on the middle Yellow River, where a river over 500 meters wide is squeezed suddenly and plunges roughly 50 meters. It is the second-largest waterfall in China.

    Jinci is a shrine to Tang Shuyu, founder of the state of Jin, and the oldest surviving imperial ritual garden, famed for its Zhou cypress, Nanlao Spring and Song clay maidens. Tianlongshan has grottoes from the Eastern Wei to Tang.

    Memorial complex for Genghis Khan on the Ejin Horo grassland, with buildings dating from the 1950s. It preserves Mongol ritual traditions such as the Eight White Yurts.

    Volcanic range on the China-North Korea border. Its summit lake, Heaven Lake, fills a crater, and the slopes show vertical forest zones with waterfalls and hot springs.
